We’re excited to debut the film photography of Jiri Abendt at this year’s HOT MESS. Abendt’s photography is an honest portrayal of real encounters between people and the city. At once poetic and revealing, the images depict vulnerable scenes of urban life in Berlin.
As a social worker, Abendt’s lived experience of working in the field of youth welfare has been foundational for his practice. Having navigated first hand the emotional toil and hardship felt by those who enter the welfare system, he seeks to visually understand the complex stories of the human beings operating inside such large and administrative structures. As such, his work visualises the darker side of the city, often shot on a Pentax Point and Shoot, while at the same time biographing his own experience of day to day life in the city.
Abendt was born in Cologne in 1993 and has been based in Berlin since 2002.
