For HOT MESS, James Beatham will be presenting two painted ceramic vases, Chain pot and Journey pot.
Working primarily with sculpture, Beatham’s practice focuses on virtual, fantasy and indeterminate objects. Drawing influence from science-fiction, holy reliquaries, magic and conspiracy theories, he creates complex compositions that suggest a forgotten narrative, just out of reach. The round nature of the vessels perpetually hides part of the narrative, so that the complex and highly detailed story is always evolving and never complete.
James Beatham is a British artist living and working in Berlin. He studied art in London before moving to Berlin in 2017. In 2019 he started the MARSFutures gallery, a collaborative project with science-fiction and fantasy writers, for impossible artworks. In 2020 he began the Floating Gallery project, hosting shows floating on the lakes around Berlin. He currently co-runs Swimming Pool Studio, a gallery space and venue in Berlin.
